Philadelphia is a city of many distinctive neighborhoods. In this class we will focus on Queen Village and Fabric Row, just south of South Street, and venture off the beaten path to explore its colorful murals, buildings, gardens, alleys, and people. Together we will learn how to use color, shape, texture and composition to create images with a fine art sensibility. This class will meet at 9th and Bainbridge, and end at 4th and Fitzwater Streets.

Princeton Photo Workshop: Exploring In and around the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Princeton Photo Workshop: Composition-on-Location Grounds for Sculpture

Grounds for Sculpture opened in 1992 on the site of the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds. The sculpture park's continuously surprising interplay of art and environment presents photographers with a myriad of creative photo opportunities.
We'll begin with a discussion of composition, camera settings and how to shoot in various lighting situations. Your instructor will be with you every step of the way to look at your work and answer questions. Together, we will explore this fantastic sculpture park while we put into practice the rules of composition to create memorable images.

Princeton Photo Workshop: Philadelphia Tall Ships Festival

Join us for a special photo opportunity at the "Tall Ships America" festival.We'll start with a discussion of composition, camera settings and available light. We'll shoot environmental images, interesting details of the twelve tall ships, the colorful marina, a tugboat, docked ships and street photography of people. Princeton Photo Workshop: Philadelphia’s Italian Market

Learn to capture the character and energy of Philadelphia’s landmark Italian Market, the nation’s oldest and one of the largest outdoor markets. We'll explore how to tell the story of the diversity of the market and its community of Mexican, Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese influences in addition to the multi-generational Italian vendors. We will focus on the heart of the market, which spans 10 city blocks and includes narrow neighborhood streets, a labyrinth of food stalls, cafes, shops and street vendors. Together, we'll shoot the market’s vibrant surroundings while developing your photography skills, including learning how to approach, engage, and photograph people.

Princeton Photo Workshop: The Schuylkill River Trail

The Schuylkill River Trail in Philadelphia is a scenic multi-use trail in the center of this beautiful and historic city. We'll will focus on the Center City section of this trail, between the Fairmount Water Works behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Walnut Street. The trail offers wonderful opportunities to photograph interesting city scenes, spectacular waterfront views, scenic overlooks, bridges, sculpture and people. Develop your eye, sharpen your photography skills and capture fresh dramatic images of familiar sights from along the river, including The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Cira Centre, and 30th Street Station.

Princeton Photo Workshop: Spruce Street Harbor Park

This class will focus on Spruce Street Harbor Park, located within Philadelphia’s Penn's Landing on the historic Delaware River waterfront. We will explore the popular summertime "urban beach park," complete with boardwalk, chairs, tables, games, hammocks and food vendors. We will also tour year-round attractions, including the historic ships moored at the Penn's Landing Marina: Cruiser Olympia, Submarine BECUNA, Tall Ship Gazela, and American tugboat Jupiter. Enjoy endless opportunities to train your eye, sharpen your photography skills, and create dynamic and engaging images.

Princeton Photo Workshop: Composition-on-Location Philadelphia City Hall

City Hall is the largest municipal building, boasting "the most comprehensive sculptural decoration of any American building". The exterior is covered with "exuberant"sculpture representing the seasons and continents, allegorical figures, heads and masks. We'll begin with a discussion of camera settings, composition and light. We'll shoot around City Hall and Dilworth Park, capturing images of monuments and sculptures, including the newly-restored LOVE sculpture at nearby LOVE Park.

After the class, those who are interested may accompany Jenny (4 people at a time; $8 admission) up the tower to City Hall’s observation deck underneath the statute of William Penn for panoramic views of Philadelphia.

Princeton Photo Workshop: NEW! The Creative Location Portrait

Washington Square Park, Philadelphia

Learn to shoot creative location portraits outdoors. During the workshop, we will explore the various qualities of existing natural light, from direct to diffused, as well as selective focus, color and composition. Students will learn to direct their subjects by taking turns posing for each other. A prop or two can also be brought to the class — a hat, gloves, shoes, a mask — to add a bit of drama and artistry to the portrait. Students should wear clothing they would like to be photographed in. The class will take place in and around Washington Square Park, Philadelphia, including side streets and alleys.

Princeton Photo Workshop: Composition on Location: Historic Philadelphia

In this class, we will explore the rich visual history of Independence National Historic Park while learning how to get great images indoors and out. We'll begin with a discussion of composition, lighting and camera settings to best capture iconic interior and exterior scenes. Students will learn to develop their eye and improve their creative technical skills to compose artistic images of the park’s unique gardens, architecture, and monuments. We will begin at the Portrait Gallery in the Second Bank of the United States and end at Independence Hall. Together, we will explore this historic area while we put into practice the rules of composition to create memorable images.

Princeton Photo Workshop: Working with a Live Model

Philadelphia Sketch Club, Philadelphia, PA

Learn how to work with a live model in a controlled lighting situation using natural light indoors. The class is held in a spacious room lit from above by an expansive skylight at one of America’s oldest artists' clubs. We will study the figure in various poses -- standing, seated, and reclining. Students are invited to bring props and accessories. We'll begin by discussing camera settings and composition to create images with a fine art sensibility. Each student will have the experience of posing and directing our model. By the time the class concludes, you will have the confidence to set up and take more interesting pictures of people.

We will take you to shoot in Philadelphia's most interesting public spaces as well as "The Real Philadelphia" which many tourists never visit. Each session is customized to your specific interests. Your instructor will be with you every step of the way to talk about camera settings and composition, to look at your work and answer your questions.
